William J. Powers, D.O. AAHIVMS
Powers Family Medicine was founded by William J. Powers, D.O. AAHIVMS . Dr. Powers is a board certified, Michigan-licensed physician with clinical family medicine experience. He provides exceptional primary and preventative care for patients of all ages. Dr. Powers has a special interest in LGBTQ/gender diverse care, gender affirming services, hormone therapy (HT/HRT), HIV care, and preventative health and education. He is AAHIVM credentialed as an HIV specialist. Besides HIV treatment, he also prescribes PrEP for patients at high risk who wish to prevent HIV infection.
Dr. Powers believes in inclusive health care for all patients. He regularly attends community events and is a frequent speaker on LGBTQ health care topics. Learn more about his recent activities on our Media page.
Dr. Powers is an avid video gamer, a proud 6-cat parent, and an advocate for local cat shelters.
Dayna Niewolak, MSN, APRN, FNP-C
Dayna joined Powers Family Medicine in September 2020. She is a Family Nurse Practitioner certified through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Dayna has worked as a registered nurse on both a surgical and cardiac unit in the hospital setting and has clinical experience within Oakland University's nurse practitioner program in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and dermatology among other areas. She loves the primary care setting and being able to follow up with patients' health concerns over time. She plans to complete her AAHIVM HIV Specialist credentialing this coming year. Dayna enjoys spending time with her husband, their two cats, family, and friends, traveling, board games, bike rides, and skiing.
Sommer Shefferly PA-C
Sommer, a NCCPA board certified Physician Assistant, joined Powers Family Medicine in November of 2021. She received clinical training through the University of Detroit Mercy’s Physician Assistant Program in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OBGYN, emergency medicine, surgical sub-specialities, and more. Sommer plans to complete her AAHIVM HIV specialist credentialing soon. When she is not supporting patients, she enjoys going on hikes with her dog Mochi, rock climbing, yoga, making art, cooking, and caring for her indoor garden of nearly 100 houseplants!
Office Features
Hypoallergenic Therapy Cats
During normal business operations, Powers Family Medicine is host to one or two of our exotic hybrid therapy cats. Five in total (but never at the office at the same time) Phoenix, Hyperion, Polaris, Fenrir, and Corvus are always eager to greet patients and lack the gene which triggers allergies. While we’ve never had anyone ever react to them, it’s always possible, so pet with care!
Relax, Play, and Create
We are gaming enthusiasts and our lobby features refreshing beverages, arcade games, art chalkboards, and all the streaming TV you can enjoy. Once you are escorted to a waiting room, a private TV awaits you where you can enjoy more streaming TV, play a classic Nintendo or Super Nintendo, or snuggle one of our therapy cats until it’s time to be seen!
